James Tan and Family
James Tan Boon Heng, 40 years old, has been with BFC since 1980. He is currently serving in the Deacon / Children ministry. James is working for a Japanese company, Nitto Kohki, as the manager for its Singapore branch. The company manufactures energy-saving products, catering to the needs of different industries such as assembling, manufacturing, oil and gas industries, marine and offshore, construction and engineering, automotive manufacturers, home appliance manufacturers, ship building and repair, etc.
James’ work keeps him busy each day, having to plan, analyse and take actions on concurrent issues.
James is married, since 1989, to May Tan-Chiang Tian Ee, who is a homemaker. They have 2 sons, Samuel Tan Guo Jing, who is 13 years old, and Jeremy Tan Guo Cong, who is 11 years old. Samuel was baptized in August 2005, and is very keen and willing to serve in the different ministries in BFC. He enjoys sports with special interest in badminton. He also likes inline skating and occasionally goes with his brother to Bedok Adventure Park to try some of the stunts. He also has a talent for animation drawing.
Jeremy is very much interested in competitive running, badminton and soccer, and does each with a very high competitive spirit.
James’ family plays badminton every week together, enjoying the time together communicating, and with much laughter and teamwork.
James has also been hooked on golf for the last 6 years, and spends much time on the game. Currently, he is still very much into the game, but, understanding that there is an opportunity cost involving his time with his family and his service to God, he plays the game only when his work calls for it.

James’ Testimony
Thanks to the founding members of BFC who laboured relentlessly in the past through weekly tracting / soul-winning programmes, going from block to block of flats to spread the good tidings that Christ is our redeemer, I encountered BFC. I entered into a relationship with the God of love when I was in primary 6. Prior to that, I did not know the purpose of life. Why am I here? What is the purpose of life? Or, rather, is life really empty, and where happiness and enjoyment last for only a short period? My school work and results were really bad. There was no self-determination to change for the better as I thought that it was too late.
Then, during one Sunday school class, the lesson and verse spoke to me, impacting me greatly. This was 2 Timothy 2:15 – “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God…… “
From that day onward, I prayed to God to help me trust Him as my personal saviour, and trusting in Him helped me through the 11th hour of the examination preparations. The grace of God carried me, and I know that my God is real and there is nothing too hard for Him if I humble myself before Him, and repent from my sins with the willingness to let God change my heart and attitude.
Till today, I am still claiming the promises of God from James 4:10 – “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.�?
The Lord has been gracious to my family, my working life, and my service in the church.
Let me conclude by saying that the longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows in my life, and He giveth more grace and time for me to accomplish my assignments.
