The Coming Deliverer - Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The book of Isaiah was written some 700 years before the birth of Christ. Herein lies the historical importance of such a prophetic book in that it foretold the birth of Jesus and God’s plan for the redemption of man. The book of Isaiah is often thought to parallel the Bible itself having 39 chapters in the first part and 27 in the second part, thus the Old and the New Testament. The ministry of Isaiah spans four kings, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. In fact his ministry continued into the reign of Manasseh. He was thought to have been martyred during Manasseh’s reign.
This verse begins with the importance that God places upon His creation, mankind. His love for us is clearly laid out in this plan. For unto us is His Son given and unto us is the reason for Christ’s humanity. It is God’s redemption plan for mankind that this gift, the birth of Jesus, is the reason we celebrate Christmas.
Thus we see Christ’s humanity in this birth. We see His deity, being the Son of God and we also see His Kingdom in the first part of Isaiah 9:6. In the second part, four names were used to characterize Jesus. The first is Wonderful Counselor. A human counselor is often one we look up to for comfort and advice. However no human counselor is without some skeleton in his closet thus no one can hold centre stage in our lives as Jesus does. He is the Counselor without comparison.
He is Mighty God. He is omnipotent and we can rely on Him completely that whatever He wills and says will be fulfilled. We can thus take heart in our eternal future.
He is also the Everlasting Father. In John 14:9, He says “He who has seen Me has seen the Father”. In John 1:1 we are told “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God” He was thus always been there and is always with us. He is also to us the Father whom we look up to.
He is also the Prince of Peace. The Prince of Peace is one who is the very embodiment of peace. Peace is not just the absence of wars and enmity amongst men and nations. It is also the state of peace between God and man.
Who else would procure this for man?
He is the Prince who has procured that peace.
