Philosophy of Ministry
Acts 2:42-47
The Concept of Worship
The Redwood forest has the tallest and oldest trees on earth, magnificent giants of God’s creation. One would expect its roots to go deep down to anchor these giants, but no, instead, the trees have intertwining root systems that hold them together and hold them upright. Yes, we do need to anchor ourselves as a body of Christ, every member intertwined to fulfill our existence to exalt God through worship. In Acts 2:42-47, members of the early church continued steadfastly devoted to worship. They continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers and they continued daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house. Worship then is foundational in Christian life. Worshipping God with the wrong motive can be as deadening as worshipping the wrong god with a sincere motive.
The Priority of Worship
We are church, each and every one of us. We therefore cannot get out of “church” as it is not a building.
When we are not in a church building, what kind of “church” are we having?
It is at work and at home. Thus we cannot separate our worship life and place it only in the church building on a Sunday. We live it wherever we are.
The Spheres of Worship
There are two spheres of worship, public and private. They complement each other. Worship is not the place but the state of the heart and mind. Who you are and not where you are.
Those who have problems with public worship have no private worship in their lives. To ignore public worship is to insult the Head of the family. It reminds us we are not the only child in the kingdom but part of a bigger family. Isolated believers are contrary to the concept of family. There are things God will do for you in public worship while not necessary available in private worship. It is designed to benefit others as well as self. God expects us to worship (1Cor 11:18-24).
If our only interaction with God and fellowship with others is on Sunday, we will have an anaemic spiritual life. Psalms 113:3 tells us that “from the rising of the sun to its going down, The Lord’s name is to be praised.” Praise and worship should be a daily routine. Anyone worshipping privately will have no problem doing it publicly.
The Value of Worship
If God is seeking something, it must be valuable. God is looking for worshippers. If we do not worship the creator, we will find something else to worship. We were made to worship God. There is a god-shaped vacuum in our hearts waiting to be filled.
Why is God looking for human worshippers?
He wants to know who understands it. (Eph 1:6, 12).
We are the only category of His creation that has to think of whether or not to worship Him. The rest of creation automatically does it. It is a conscious choice for us. One day, we will have no choice. (Phi 2:10). The choice we have to make is to worship willingly, out of love.
God saved us to be His worshippers. If we don’t worship Him as a way of life, we are not really believing. Worship is the internal part that keeps our spirit alive. Our lack of worship does not diminish God. If we don’t worship, we lose.
